Today in three sentences

  1. $38bn of data-center construction debt tied to Oracle leases has gone undistributed by JPMorgan, MUFG, Morgan Stanley, and SMBC for over 6 months, and they're now exploring a "significant risk transfer" structure (SRT: banks sell a loan's credit risk to third-party investors while the asset stays on the balance sheet but no longer ties up capital) (Axios/Startup Fortune, 10-13/14) — the market's pricing of AI construction has shifted from "how expensive is it to borrow" to "can it even be paid back." For context: Oracle's 5-year credit default swap (CDS, the annual premium for insuring this company's debt) is around 260bp, up from 144bp at the start of the year, but that quote dates from 10-7/8 (Morgan Stanley), 6-7 days ago,not a same-day figure。
  2. — Risk assets fell together on the day: NVDA down 3.07% to $221.51, ORCL down 7.19% intraday, small-modular-reactor name SMR down 10.2%, STAR 50 down 3.29%, Bitcoin at $81,872 — a cross-asset, same-day, same-direction move like this points to a broad risk-appetite pullback, not a change in any single sector's fundamentals.
  3. Spot gold at $4100.24/oz, down 1.32%, while the 10-year TIPS real yield sits at 2.88% over the same period (10-13, near an 18-year high) — the cost of holding non-yielding gold keeps rising, yet the PBOC's monthly official reserve assets report shows it added 740,000 ounces in September, the largest single month since resuming gold purchases in November 2024 — two forces are head-to-head.

Main storyline: AI buildout → cost of capital (Day 18, since 09-27) · Today's change: $38bn of Oracle-lease construction debt unsold for over 6 months, with banks turning to a "significant risk transfer" structure (10-13/14); the 10-year real yield at 2.88% (10-13) is near an 18-year high

What's different from yesterday isThe pressure has shifted location: Yesterday this chain's readings were concentrated on the rate side (10Y at 5.21%, term premium ACM about 0.95%, 10-6, highest since 2014); what actually changed within the past 48 hours isOn the bank-distribution side— JPMorgan, MUFG, Morgan Stanley, and SMBC have been unable to distribute $38bn of Texas/Wisconsin construction debt tied to Oracle leases for over 6 months, and are now exploring a "significant risk transfer" structure (Axios/Startup Fortune). On the credit side, ORCL's 5-year CDS is around 260bp (the highest since 2009, against a backdrop of $70bn in data-center expansion plus FY26 free cash flow of -$23.7bn)The reading dates to 10-7/8; it's used only as background here — there's no new quote today。

Two earlier leading signals are both still climbing: hyperscalers filed SEC 424B prospectus supplements 6 times within 90 days; power-sector CPI is up 4.04% YoY (September). The chain keeps biting its own tail — issuing debt to build data centers pushes up long-end rates, construction pushes up power prices, inflation won't come down, the Fed doesn't dare cut, and the 2.88% real yield (10-13) makes the next round of construction even more expensive. The counter-case to keep in mind: most AI spending counts as investment and doesn't flow directly into CPI; power-price increases are fairly regional; and over the long run AI productivity gains should actually suppress inflation — but that's the long-run average, while rate pricing is about the here-and-now and the margin.

Private credit's three lights

Three lights, 3/3 pointing the same direction, none past threshold yet, same as yesterday. 1 BDCs (listed private-credit vehicles): median discount -15.3%, median drawdown -17.2%, FSK deepest at -42.4% (all readings as of the 10-13 close); 2 9 redemption or secondary-discount events over the past 30 days, 5 of which hit redemption gates — the worst month was September (6 events); 3 the CCC-BB tiering spread keeps widening to 1076bp, with CCC at 12.67% as a 10-14 reading and BB at 1.91% as a 10-12 reading — the two tiers are on different dates, so the spread is simply each side's latest reading minus the other's; the next piece will align both to the same day. Over the same period, the public-market high-yield composite OAS (option-adjusted spread: the pure credit spread after stripping out optionality like prepayment) is only 3.16% (10-13) — such a low composite spread alongside all three lights flashing together is exactly what shows risk has moved to places without daily quotes.

Twelve domains

AI — NVDA fell 3.07% to $221.51, ORCL touched $132.98 intraday (closed at $143.20 on 10-13). Final judgment should be based on CDS quotes (latest reading 10-7/8) and bank distribution progress.

BTC — Price at $81,872; after the hotter-than-expected CPI print, it dipped intraday to $81,797, down about 4.6% from the 10-04 high of $85,808. Realized cap (all coins valued at their last transfer price) is $1.085 trillion, with a 30-day slope annualizing at +19.2% versus a price gain of only 6.2% — a -4.7pp divergence — the model still holds an expansion pattern. Of the three conditions that were all met together on 10-02, 2/3 still check out on review: ETF flows saw a $175.7M net inflow on 10-13, but net flow over the past 5 days was -$597.6M, so this one doesn't meet the bar.

Gold — Spot price at $4100.24/oz, -1.32% over 1 day and -6.23% over 21 days, a 25.6% drawdown from the 250-day high of 5510.73 (recovering that drawdown would require a 34.4% rally from the current price — not the same number as the drawdown). The PBOC's monthly official reserve assets report: gold reserves at 2409.59 tons at end-September, the 23rd straight month of additions; but gold is only 8.5% of China's official reserves, far below the roughly 27% global central-bank average — this is a two-decade-scale reallocation, not a one-time anchor switch.

A-share — STAR 50 closed at 1,380.26 points, down 3.29%, down 9.79% over the past 5 days, a 37.48% drawdown from its 52-week high; only 20.0% of constituents are above their 200-day moving average. But the falsification signal was not triggered: on 10-08, SMIC/Hua Hong/CXMT launched Q4 equipment tenders worth over CNY 12bn, with domestic winners expected to exceed 60% share. The divergence between the sharp price drop and the strengthening domestic equipment tender activity is today's most noteworthy point.

Bonds — At the 10-13 close: 3M 4.26% / 2Y 4.79% / 10Y 5.21% / 30Y 5.56%, 2s10s at 0.42% (vs. 0.20% on 9-21), steepening continues. The selling pressure comes from the term premium (the extra compensation investors demand for locking in long-term debt, after stripping out expectations for future short-term rates — estimated at about 0.95% by the NY Fed's ACM model) rather than inflation expectations (the breakeven inflation rate is flat at 2.33%, i.e. the yield gap between nominal Treasuries and TIPS, the market's implied future inflation); the 10-07 10Y auction at 5.300% and the 10-08 30Y auction at 5.618% were both the highest since 2000, with decent demand, while the MOVE bond-volatility index eased to 99.06 from 101.09 on 10-13.

Congress — Within a 45-day window of 16,460 disclosed trades, the Sentinel flagged 12 tickers; MSFT is the most concentrated with 14 trades (including 4 options), over the disclosure period 09/01–10/12. House Energy and Commerce Committee member Kevin Hern added 22 new trades, concentrated in DVN and CVX; on 09/23 he sold DVN in the $50,001–100,000 range. Of the 12 flagged tickers, 8 fall under the "power and generation" or "critical materials" themes — pointing to the same power bottleneck as the main storyline.

Biotech — XBI 147.01 (+0.14%), IBB 203.54 (+1.76%); Shenwan Pharma & Biotech Index 7583.55 (-1.13%), Biological Products 5348.80 (-2.14%), A-share innovative-drug basket at -13.01% excess return over 6 months. Chinese assets going global remains the main storyline: Novartis/Abogen's mRNA licensing deal worth up to $7.8bn (10-02, CNBC), and Gilead/Vir's T-cell engager (a type of bispecific antibody that grabs a tumor cell with one arm and pulls in an immune T-cell with the other to kill it) worth up to $1.87bn.

Cybersecurity — On 10-14, reports surfaced that OpenAI plans to acquire a cybersecurity startup, and the sector sold off in response: PANW fell 4.30% to 379.94, CRWD fell 2.70% to 254.16, FTNT fell 2.43% to 186.13 (Yahoo Finance). The prior dominant narrative was "AI boosts cybersecurity demand"; today marks the first time the opposite — "AI labs moving in directly" — has shown up, with no deal terms or target disclosed yet. Among 12 US-listed names, median EV/Sales (enterprise value over annual sales, a valuation multiple that ignores profitability) is 13.84x, with the 4-49x dispersion band still not narrowing.

Energy — The value-chain gap widened to 84pp: the grid side (GEV/PWR/AMSC) is up a median +42.44% YTD, while solar manufacturing is down about -42%. But the whole group sold off hard on the day: GEV -6.2%, SMR -10.2%, OKLO -8.6%, ENPH -8.4%. Energy-storage orders over the past 6 weeks: 7 independent-demand deals totaling $800M, 0 related-party deals; over the past 90 days, 1 of 12 deals was related-party (SpaceX buying $405M of Megapacks from Tesla, 33.6% of the 90-day total) — excluding that, independent demand shows no pickup.

Emerging — 22 technical ratings unchanged (6 already triggered / 10 medium-term / 5 long-term, as of 10-13). Thematic ETFs broadly weakened on 10-14; CIBR (cybersecurity) at $104.04 still leads with +44.6% YTD, while BOTZ (robotics) at 34.145 is -6.8% YTD. Total stablecoin market cap at $307.04bn is down about 1.8% from 10-13 (a roughly $5.8bn two-day shrink); RWA (real-world asset) TVL is flat at $4.098bn.

Venture — YTD there have been 64 billion-dollar-plus rounds totaling about $409.6bn, with AI accounting for 89.7% and the top 5 accounting for 70% — a record concentration (newly added: Ramp's $1.85bn round at a $60bn valuation, 10-9). But secondary proxy assets are broadly weakening: SPCX at $152.43 is down 9.34% in a week, Figma at $21.40 is -43.66% YTD, and Fermi at $3.125 is -61.37% YTD, a new low — primary is red-hot while the exit window is cooling, so the rating is downgraded to neutral-to-cold.

Winners — Zhipu AI (02513.HK) closed at HK$572, down 4.83%, with a market cap of HK$293bn; MiniMax closed at HK$204.2, down 3.68% (both are 10-14 HKEX closing prices). The Hang Seng Index fell only 0.13% the same day while the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.91%, indicating this is capital specifically repricing "AI concept stocks". Chokepoint scan round 58 only added new evidence for "cloud provider capex".

Signals worth watching next

  1. That $38bn of construction debtWhether distribution completes before November, or it shifts into a "significant risk transfer" structure — the latter would confirm risk has moved off banks' balance sheets to somewhere undisclosed. We also need a fresh ORCL 5-year CDS quote after 10-13 (the current reading is from 10-7/8, around 260bp); whether it clears 300bp can't be judged until that new quote arrives.
  2. Whether the 10-year real yield (DFII10) breaks above 3.00%(now 2.88%); if breached, watch whether gold loses the 250-day low of 3985.73 (now 4100.24, 2.8% from that level).
  3. Any one of the three lights breaks its threshold: BDC median discount widens from -15.3% to -20%, CCC-BB spread widens from 1076bp to 1200bp, or high-yield composite OAS rises above 4.00% from 3.16% — composite OAS is the last one that hasn't moved yet; once it does, it's no longer being "tucked away in the dark," but outright public-market repricing.
